Substance use disorders (SUDs) have increased dramatically over the past several decades. Although preventing substance use among youth is a public health priority, there are few evidence-based prevention programs feasible for delivery in primary care or community settings. The Hassenfeld Institute will be partnering with community agencies to pilot a series of parent-youth interventions that aim to prevent youth substance use among families of adults in recovery. These interventions are:
- Family-centered
- Delivered by lay personnel in the community
- Focused on educating families about substance use while also improving family communication and functioning
- Culturally adapted
Community-based prevention programs are critical to reaching the most vulnerable populations in Rhode Island and mitigating the impact of parental substance use on children
