Substance Use Prevention

Family-centered interventions to prevent youth substance use among families of adults in recovery.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) have increased dramatically over the past several decades. Although preventing substance use among youth is a public health priority, there are few evidence-based prevention programs feasible for delivery in primary care or community settings. The Hassenfeld Institute will be partnering with community agencies to pilot a series of parent-youth interventions that aim to prevent youth substance use among families of adults in recovery. These interventions are:

  • Family-centered
  • Delivered by lay personnel in the community
  • Focused on educating families about substance use while also improving family communication and functioning
  • Culturally adapted

Community-based prevention programs are critical to reaching the most vulnerable populations in Rhode Island and mitigating the impact of parental substance use on children
