Youth Sports

Baseball in Rhode Island has a handful of different playing levels that allow opportunities for every skill level. Each organization sets their own prices, but every league has some sort of free registration program that a family can apply for. Little League has an age based system to keep kids in the appropriate division based on age: Tee Ball division (4 to 6), Coach Pitch division (7 to 9), Kid Pitch or Minors (9 to 10), Majors (10 to 12), Junior (13 to 14), then Senior Division (15 to 16). Little League and Cal Ripken are recreation leagues, so they are typically for the average to above average player looking to play a spring sport. AAU organizations are highly competitive and are typically more expensive and time consuming.

Edgewood Girls Softball League

Edgewood Girls Softball League is a slow pitch girls softball league with 4 divisions: tee ball, junior division, middle division and senior division. Registration is typically held at the end of January / beginning of February. The season runs April 1st through the end of June with games and practices being held at Park View Middle School field Monday through Sunday. Most teams in the junior, middle and senior divisions typically play 2 to 3 games a week and the tee ball players meet 2 times a week for skills building and mini games. They are based in Cranston, but they accept players from any city or town who want to play with them.

Swim Empowerment

Black Youth in Rhode Island drown at five times the rate of White Youth. Swim Empowerment works to reverse this alarming trend. They believe that in order to reintroduce swimming into African American community, it is important to begin with children. Every year, Stages of Freedom provides the funds for an increasing number of Rhode Island youth of color to take swimming lessons through seven partnering YMCAs. The first step is calling your local YMCA to confirm there is still an opening for non-swimmers in your child’s age bracket and for the period of time you wish them to attend. Partnering YMCAs: Cranston, East Side/Mt. Hope, Pawtucket Family Branch.

Beat the Streets Providence

Beat the Streets Providence starts after-school wrestling teams that provide both youth development and academic support. We use wrestling instruction and competition as an incentive for the most at-risk students, who otherwise would not choose to participate in after-school programming, to learn the study and life habits they need to succeed. We draw the students in to learn about how to study, persevere in school and in life, and hear the stories and experience of their adult community mentors to expand their own conception of who they can become. All practices are free to registered members.

RISK has no contracts because students may change their minds often after several months of training and it is unfair to have them financially committed with an extended term contract. They offer a variety of childrens’ programs based on age and skill level.
